Winston Churchill High School Hockey Team

Wins 2024 Spring League Championship!

Facing a challenging start to the season with a record of 3-4-1 at the halfway mark, many had begun to doubt the Bulldogs' ability to compete. However, fueled by determination and an unyielding spirit, the twenty-one players, comprising rising 8th graders and current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, refused to let adversity define their season. Igniting a sensational comeback, the team embarked on a 5-game consecutive winning streak to take the title. They outclassed their opponents with an impressive scoreline of 50-23 over those five games, beating teams ranked in first, second, third and fourth place at the end of the regular season.This extraordinary turnaround showcased individual talent but more importantly demonstrated the importance of teamwork and the power of unity in the face of adversity. The crowning moment came as Churchill High School beat number 1 ranked RAM in the Spring League Championship, marking their first triumph in four years! Reflecting on their journey, the Coaches expressed immense pride in the team's resilience and determination, stating, "This victory is a testament to the character and perseverance of these great student-athletes. They never lost faith in themselves, and their hard work and dedication paid off in the most gratifying way. It's a huge win for them and the club. Coming together, trusting each other, believing in one another, and creating a united force that was unstoppable from the first puck drop to the final whistle. We are so proud of what these players learned and accomplished."

Churchill Varsity 1 Finishes Season as the #1 in the MHC , #2 Team in the State,

3 players named MHC All-Conference!

Senior forward Zack Silver has been named Montgomery Hockey Conference First-team All-Conference player. and, Senior Josh Potenti, and Junior Goaltender Cam Shure, have been selected as Montgomery Hockey Conference Second Team All-Conference players.

State tournament recap

Four teams from the Montgomery Hockey Conference, Churchill Varsity 1, Bethesda Chevy Chase, Walt Whitman, and Walter Johnson, each earned a spot to compete in the 16-team Maryland State High School Hockey Tournament leading to a state championship, and an opportunity to represent Maryland in the USA Hockey National Championship. During round 1, Walt Whitman lost to Leonardtown in a 3-4 OT game, and Walter Johnson lost 2-3 to the Logsdon Wolves in a surprise upset. BCC advanced to the Round 2 Quarterfinals in their 5-3 win over South River, and Churchill also advanced to the Round 2 Quarterfinals with their decisive 8-2 win over Broadneck. In the Quarterfinals, Churchill beat Glenelg 5-3, and went on to win over Urbana 5-1 in the Semifinals, which earned them a berth to the coveted Maryland High State Championship. In a hard-fought battle, Churchill completed their season as the top team in the Montgomery Hockey Conference, the second best team in the state and a silver medal in the 3-5 state championship game vs. Oakdale.

MSHL Team Academic Honor Roll Award

Each season the Maryland Student Hockey League (MSHL), made up of more than 50 schools, recognizes the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Girls teams that have the highest weighted GPA, as of the end of marking period 2, among their fellow schools.

This year's winners are Winston Churchill Varsity 1 in the Varsity category, and Richard Montgomery in the JV category.

In addition to the activities detailed in the article, Zack has played a vital role with our Hockey Club off the ice. He was integral in organizing and managing our summer dry land training, initiated a player group chat before TS was up and running, assisted with player registration at the start of the season, facilitated the team jacket order, and has consistently been the "Go-To" person on a multitude of topics. What is most appreciates is that Zack took the initiative to volunteer for most of these responsibilities without being asked.
